so here's a question.

why "snake anthony"? i'm assuming its not a random nick!

Have you heard Medeski Martin and Wood's Your Name Is Snake Anthony?

That Armchair Philosopher said...

i just did..

hmm, i don't know how i like it .. its a nice bit of music to act as background to certain NYPD blue-ish detective-y shows.. you know, when they're walking the streets looking to bust drug dealers and other such? :)

Snake Anthony said...

Haha. True. No one I know shares my unconditional love for MMW. Those who like their work prefer their earlier mellower stuff.

That Armchair Philosopher said...

hmm, something which might be worth checking out I guess.

so what other kind of stuff do you like? I'm not too familiar with this genre of music, whatever its classified as.. jazz? hip-hop?

Try their album, Tonic. If you want to listen to just one song to get am idea of how radically they've changed style, try their live version of Hey Joe. Stunning. MMW is broadly jazz though funk jazz is more specific. Some songs are a little ambient. John Scofield and Tab Two make similar music. The albums I recommend are A Go Go and Flagman Ahead. Two of my all time favourites.

I like all sorts of music. Tend to go through phases though.

You?

lovely, i'll check those out. as for what music i like - heh, my profile page has stuff which is an incomplete list. but it varies a lot on my mood. i love joe satriani at times, psychedelic rock - floyd, et al, indie stuff, british rock - billy idol, smiths, some modern stuff too, western classical, bits of techno/trance.. i'm partial to guitar solos (i play rhythm and lead guitar) so stuff like GNR, lynnrd skynrd too.

heh, i have phases, i guess - sometimes many in the course of one day!

Ah. A guitarist.

That Armchair Philosopher said...

Indeed.

why does that statement convey a sense of finality, though? :)

Snake Anthony said...

Finalty? Where did you get that from? :) What I meant was that it made sense when you said you are a guitarist. Reflects in your taste in music.

That Armchair Philosopher said...

Hehe, I was just kidding there :)

Its rather tough poking fun using text messages - someone should definitely invent things which contextualize statements.. Something better than things like _wink_, _smug look_ or _maniacal grin_ :)

I'm pretty sure personalised emoticons will be available soon. You'll have to pay a fee to have photographs taken of you (or to have a cartoon made of you) in a variety of different expressions by some special machine and then you can use them when you chat blog or write emails. You'll be able to add sound bytes with your signature noises and expressions. Won't you be happy then?

That Armchair Philosopher said...

hmm, thats a pretty good startup idea actually. i'll give you 10% of profits when we go IPO.. okay? The business model of charging people for their own mugs needs revising though!

I dont know if that would really make me happy - after all, I much rather prefer face to face - real life - interaction than web based. Meet real people and not their web personifications :)

Snake Anthony said...

10%? *raises eyebrows*

Actually, I sometimes really like the way new media is taking us - you don't have to meet anyone you don't want to. Besides, the main guiding principle of all such things is laziness.

That Armchair Philosopher said...

_Alright_, 15%.

Actually, the vagaries of the new media is something I'm very interested in - even wrote an entry about it a while ago. As for your argument - you don't have to meet someone you don't want to in real life either.. :)

There are predictions for 2007 that all the social networks and blogs on the web are going to increasingly make real life social interactions outmoded.. Scary. What happens to the world when everyone entirely relies on the web and _Then_ the machines take over?

Snake Anthony said...

Not true. There are plenty of people you _have_ to meet in real life. *makes face*

The machines taking over is a legitimate fear with the advent of new media but I personally have my doubts. (Ok.. I just typed out a mini thesis as to why I thnk so and deleted it because this discussion cannot be had on a comments page.) Nevermind. :)

That Armchair Philosopher said...

awww. you disappoint me. as far as i'm concerned, a discussion can be had whenver - be it on the top of a ferris wheel when the power goes off, or on the comments section of a blog. on a topic totally unrelated to the blog post too :)

mini-thesis. heh, i actually did that on Jups blog a week ago. write a blog entry about it then lol.

eh, and am i to assume that you're anti social enough to make faces at meeting people in real life? tsk tsk.

Snake Anthony said...

Haha, I do have do a range of facial expressions at the prospect of meeting certain sorts of people - doctors, new neighbours (or rather, the people who we've moved next to), people I've been avoiding. But I'm open to persuasion.

Interesting, oddly enough.
